Finding Peace This Holiday Season – Michelle Smith

Today’s guest blogger on The Unsanity is a new friend of mine who has personally helped with my stress and anxiety at the House of Care in rural central PA at the hospital we both work at. Michelle is a very wise individual, promoting balance and reminding everyone in her life to take care of YOU. You are number one, and you need to find your inner peace this holiday season.

When I was a child, I did not understand why adults found the holiday season to be stressful. It was great. There were parties. There were family gatherings with presents. And the food was so yummy. There were trees to decorate, cookies to make, and maybe even some snow to play in. What in the world was stressful about these things?

Now that I am an adult and “life” has happened, I totally get it. When I was in my early twenties, my father died suddenly from a massive heart attack during the Christmas season. Each year, Christmas is a yearly reminder of my father’s physical absence. And, all those things that were so magical and enchanting as a child are now tasks to conquer on my list. Looking at that list can create stress and anxiety that can be difficult to manage.

Over the past decade of cultivating a yoga practice, I have come to realize that my practice is the doorway to finding peace during the holiday season and all year long. Yoga equips me with tools that help me find my true, higher, peaceful self. Yoga is so much more than a physical practice done in a studio. Yoga equips me with a set of tools that have a positive effect on my being.

Poses or the position we put are body in has an energetic effect. Through self-awareness, it is important to recognize when we are anxious and stressed. Responding appropriately during those first moments of realization is crucial to finding internal peace quickly. The longer we are stressed and anxious, the more time it may take to return to center and peace. Face-down positions have a grounding effect and are great for balancing anxiety and stress. You can simply turn your palms face down. If practiced over time, the subtle practice of turning your palms face down may yield large returns of internal peace. Or, you can lie on the floor or your bed face down for several moments and see if you feel a subtle grounding sensation.

The breath is central to the yoga practice because it interfaces directly with the nervous system. There are simple breathing practices that we can employ to upregulate the parasympathetic nervous system, the part of the nervous system responsible for helping us rest and restore. We can be in a truly crazy environment and through some simple breathing practices stay relaxed. One easy thing you can do is lengthen your exhale. A basic practice for lengthening your exhale is to take a breath and count the length of your inhale and exhale. Then, for the next 5 breaths, keep your inhale the same count, but lengthen your exhale by 1 count each time. At the end of those 5 breaths, notice how you feel.  Do you feel more relaxed? You may need to repeat the practice several times to notice a positive effect.

Another wonderful tool for grounding and finding your higher self during the holidays is disciplining yourself to bring your concentration to one specific thing. This is mindfulness. Find something specific you want to bring your attention to during the holiday season. The more specific it is, the better. Maybe it is the sound of your breath? Or maybe you want it to be the sensation of air passing through the very tip of each nostril? Or maybe you want to visualize a color you associate with peace and visualize that color moving into your body as you inhale and out of your body as you exhale. Are you sitting in holiday traffic? Are you worrying about the weather forecast and how it will impact your travel plans? Or are you sitting in front of your bat-shit-crazy relative at Christmas dinner? Any of these mindfulness practices can be done inconspicuously to help you find your center, stay in control of the emotions and sensations arising, and know peace.

Knowing peace independent of what is going on around you and even inside of you is key to finding the magic and “child-like” wonder in this holiday season. Pick a tool that resonates with you and commit to practicing it. These are simple practices that can be done anywhere that, if practiced over time, will bring you the greatest gift of all: an internal fountain of joy and peace.

3 Steps to Overcome Your Setbacks & Move Forward Confidently – Tyese Knight

I have always been an ambitious dreamer. I set big goals and work hard to accomplish them. Sometimes my ideas work beautifully and sometimes I question why I even try!

In the race of life, we are bound to have setbacks, whether minor or major, that cause hiccups on the path to our goals. It can be challenging to rebound from these setbacks. Feelings of self-doubt, anger, guilt, or sadness can hold us back even more. Just because we have these feelings, it doesn’t mean that we should stop working towards our goals. Here are 3 steps to overcome setbacks and move forward confidently.

Step 1: Mourn Your Loss

So you messed up, screwed up, or just had some bad luck. Most people would say, “Don’t be sad about it.” I’m telling you now, go ahead and be sad or mad about it. It is okay not to be okay. We can’t be happy go lucky all the time!

Sometimes we just need to feel what we feel and get it out of our system. We are capable of experiencing a wide range of emotions for a reason. There is something we need to learn from those feelings.

If you need to bury your head under your comforter or veg out in front of the TV for a few days, go ahead and do it. Unpack your sadness and other negative feelings. Just don’t stay in that place permanently!

For the New Year, I made a goal for weight loss. As soon as January 1st hit, I was on it! I made better eating choices, started counting calories, and exercised daily. Unfortunately, after a weigh in at the end of the month, I was disappointed to discover that I did not lose a single pound. I was PISSED.

So I gave up…for a few days. Started eating my feelings and stopped waking up early to exercise. It was a pretty pathetic sight but I needed to be in that place for a while to lick my wounds.

Once you work out your feelings about your setback, you are in a better place to pick up the pieces and move on.

Step 2: Evaluate Your Missteps

This step requires you to figure out what happened to cause the setback. In other words, what could you have done better to prevent this from happening?

That means you need to put on your big girl panties (or big boy underwear) and admit that you may have played a part in your own setback. It might be hard to hear but if you really want your goals to work out, you have to take responsibility for your actions.

Sometimes we have our blinders on and we can’t see the situation from any perspective besides our own. It may be helpful to find a friend or colleague you trust to help you see it from a different point of view.

After my foiled attempt at losing weight, I whined about it on social media. Many of my friends chimed in, not just to give me support, but to give me advice based on their own experience with weight loss. I was able to get a new perspective, learn what I did wrong and gain new ideas for losing weight.

Step 3: Make a Plan to Improve

Now that you have felt all the feelings and discovered what you did wrong, it’s time to get back on track. Don’t wait too long to put your new plan into action. Now that you have some momentum, use it to your advantage.

Here are some questions you need to ask yourself as you prepare a new plan of attack:

  • Does your goal need adjusting?
  • Do you need more time to accomplish your goal?
  • What additional resources would help you?
  • What would you change about your approach this time around?
  • What or who can hold you accountable for your plan?

A final word of inspiration

You can do this! Don’t be anxious about trying again. Think about the courage it took for you to try to accomplish this goal the first time. Don’t let your setbacks hold you back!

I’m Still Here 

I haven't written in a while. I've been too preoccupied with life at the moment.. Not sure if that's good or bad really at this point in my life. Things have gone great, things have gone sour, things have gone amazing. It all depends on the day you catch me on and what I'm doing unfortunately. Sometimes I feel like I just can't win either way, but that doesn't matter to anyone. 

A little update – I had my first art show at The Steamtown Mall last night for the Steamtown Market. I guess it was a success. I had many friends there to support me and so many stayed with me, but I didn't sell much or as much as I wanted to at least. Maybe one day I'll get there. I got a lot of "Wow, you're really talented." And "Wow those look great, you have a good eye." But I only sold maybe 3-4 things. Didn't make a profit really after all I spent to go into this. But there's hope and more chances in the future. Here's a couple photos from the night – my stand looked alright. It could have been better and bigger like everyone else's there but it just wasn't since this was my first show. 


Anyway – I'm off to NJ tomorrow to visit my mom for Mother's Day and I hope I don't fall asleep from being so tired after this weekend.

‘There is an area of the mind that could be called unsane, beyond sanity, and yet not insane. Think of a circle with a fine split in it. At one end there’s insanity. You go around the circle to sanity, and on the other end of the circle, close to insanity, but not insanity, is unsanity.’

Well there it is guys. That’s where I got my name from. Have any of you ever heard of the acid trip band called Hallucinogen? Well, now you have and you’re welcome.

They are rad and I remember listening to this when I was in high school just sitting there thinking, “Wow, who ever wrote this must have been on some pretty rad drugs that I’ll never take so I have to live vicariously through them for the time being.” And so I did. This is where my name came from and I don’t think there is an actual video for the song but just listen to what I have below. Just pretend you are on acid – or if you are, even better for you because this beat is very different and amazing. They only have a few songs from what I can tell but man did the lyrics make sense to me.

It’s a Friday night and I’m sitting here just browsing the internet because people think they need to tell me how to live my life recently and I’m just getting plain sick of it. I’m sorry, I need to take my lynch when? Oh okay, so I’m not even allowed to pick it any more? I have to go when other people go because you said so? Okay, yeah that’s cool. Stop the micro-managing and we’ll all be a bit happier I think. I know it doesn’t come from you but if you’re not the one with the actual problem with me then leave it alone. I will not be told to do something I’m uncomfortable with and I most certainly will not do it with you yelling at me telling me I have to. That’s not how I work. Sorry.

I’ve been reading a lot lately. A lot of books that I haven’t read before and a lot of books that I have actually read before. Divining the Future is an amazing book that I came across in the New Age section of Barnes and Nobles a few years ago and it’s amazing and talks all about spirituality. Not that I really am into that stuff, but I think a lot of the quotes and things in there might be useful for helping me de-stress from this job and other things in my life like my money situation I’m currently in. I need something to help me with that because right now, nothing else is helping and I don’t know what to do. So I’m reading this book to see how to not be so stressed with every single thing I do in life these days. So far so good, I still have a lot to go though since it’s a long book.

I’m going to lead you, kicking and screaming, giggling and laughing, into the future. I’m going to relax you, I’m going to get you! A spiritually cleansing derangment of the senses. The happy choas out of witch enlightment might come. Oh no that was real, lets get out of here.

Anyway, I think I’ve rambled on enough for the night. I hope you guys enjoy my new layout I just re-did again. I really love how WordPress is coming out with more and more free options for us basic users and more customizations. Finally. I remember when I had stated this there weren’t that many and now there are over 4 dozen free options with more that just keep on coming. So thank you, WordPress.

I’m Glad You Came.

Get your head out of the gutter.
I’ve been listening to this song basically all morning, and I don’t know why. Maybe because it hold meaning to me? No, no that’s not it. I didn’t even know of the band until I heard it on the radio one day and decided that I really liked it.. and now I can’t stop. It’s so catchy. The video is pretty cool, but it’s not your over the top video like I was expecting.

Today is Friday, however, so TGIF to you all. I’m slightly sad because I can’t go to Philly tomorrow for Comic Con and meet Thor… I don’t have the money and I don’t want to ask people for money because I also don’t have anyone to go with now. I hate being alone. I hate when people have no urge to go do anything with me at all.

I need to buy so many things like an air conditioner for the apartment so we’re not dying in the heat anymore, but I think I have to wait till the end of the month for that now; so I don’t go broke ass on everything else I need to live. I need to stop spending money on stupid shit. And I think I’m going to go donate clothes somewhere this weekend because I have too many (less than I did at mom’s house, but still too many) because I can’t fit anymore in my room. And since I’ve moved I’ve bought enough to basically replace what I had. Unsure. Oh well, I’ll go tear apart my room later on tonight or tomorrow.

Side note, speaking of tomorrow, (Saturday) I’m upset the LA Kings won the first game of the finals. I thought fershure the Devils had it. I hate how the Kings play though, and how they can get away with so much. I think we already found the team the TV announcers are favoring and who the Ref’s are favoring, and that’s just wrong.

I hope there’s something good on TV this weekend to help me with my boredum. I’m also going to working on my resume this weekend and fixing what my mom said about it as well. Make things easier for myself in case my work decides to be weird and say hey! I’m not paying you anymore or something like that. It’s better to have it than not have anything to start with right? And I can’t use my ‘creative’ resume for a professional job unless it’s in art or design, which is what I actually went to school for. Funny how things play out, isn’t it? I don’t even do anything with what I went to school for. I think I definitely should have went for something different like Forensics or something. *sigh*

Oh well, I think that’s enough for today. So much to do, just so much procrastination these days. Even here at work… hmm.
